Shema Yisrael (or Sh'ma Yisrael or just Shema) (Hebrew: שְׁמַע יִשְׂרָאֵל; "Hear, [O] Israel") are the first two words of a section of the Torah (Hebrew Bible) that is a centerpiece of the morning and evening Jewish prayer services. The first verse encapsulates the monotheistic essence of Judaism: "Hear, O Israel: the Lord is our God, the Lord is one," found in Deuteronomy 6:4.
Observant Jews consider the Shema to be the most important part of the prayer service in Judaism, and its twice-daily recitation as a mitzvah (religious commandment). It is traditional for Jews to say the Shma as their last words, and parents teach it to their children before they go to sleep at night.
The Magen David (shield of David, or the Star of David) is the symbol that is mostly common and associated with Judaism today. It represent the shape of King David's shield (or perhaps the simbol he had on it) which he used to keep the strength of the Almighty with him during battle.
The Chai, in the Hebrew language:"חי", spelled by these two hebrew letters means "living," is related to the term for "life," chaim = חיים, and also appears in the slogan "`am yisrael chai!" עם ישראל חי ("The nation of Israel lives!", referring to all Jews). Moreover, there have been various mystical numerological speculations about the fact that, according to the system of gem-atria, the letters of chai add up to 18. For this reason, 18 is a spiritual number in Judaism, and many Jews give gifts of money in multiples of 18 as a result.
The "hamsa" or "khamsa/chamsa is popular as a charm most often worn as a necklace, but can be found as a decorative element in houses, on key chains, on other jewelery items. Many artists use the image of the hamsa hand in jewelry, paintings, sculptures, wall decorations, and amulets.
The renewed interest in Kabbalah and mystical Judaism is a factoring in bringing the hamsa pendant back into vogue. In Jewish mysticism,is a symbol for good luck and against evil eye.
The Star of David , known in Hebrew as the Shield of David or Magen David (Hebrew מָגֵן דָּוִד; Biblical Hebrew Māḡēn Dāwīḏ, Tiberian [mɔˈɣen dɔˈvið], Modern Hebrew [maˈɡen daˈvid], Ashkenazi Hebrew and Yiddish Mogein Dovid [ˈmɔɡeɪn ˈdɔvid] or Mogen Dovid) is a generally recognized symbol of Jewish identity and Judaism.
Its shape is that of a hexagram, the compound of two equilateral triangles. The hexagram has been in use as a symbol of Judaism since the 17th century, with precedents in the 14th to 16th centuries in Central Europe, where the Shield of David was partly used in conjunction with the Seal of Solomon (the hexagram) on Jewish flags. Its use probably derives from medieval (11th to 13th century) Jewish protective amulets (segulot).
